5 Must-Have Items to Keep Nearby During Your Newborn Session

As a lifestyle newborn photographer in Northern New Jersey, my sessions are all about keeping things relaxed, natural, and comfortable for both baby and parents. One of the best ways to help your session go smoothly is to have a few key items nearby. These little things can make a big difference in keeping baby happy and content while we capture those precious early moments. Most of this is self explanatory and since most of my newborn sessions are in your home you would usually have most of these items nearby anyway but it’s worth mentioning just in case.

1. Pacifier Even if your baby doesn’t always take a pacifier, it’s helpful to have one nearby during your session. A pacifier can be a great way to quickly soothe your little one if they get a bit fussy between shots. It allows us to keep the flow of the session going without too many long breaks, and often helps settle baby into cozy, sleepy poses.

2. Swaddles Swaddles are not only practical but also beautiful for photos. Having a few soft, neutral swaddles on hand can help keep your baby calm and cozy throughout the session. Swaddling mimics the feeling of being in the womb, which is naturally soothing for newborns. Plus, they add a timeless, classic look to your images. I usually will bring a few neutral swaddle options with me but it’s always good to have options.

3. Burp Cloths Newborns are known for their little spit-ups and dribbles, so having a few burp cloths nearby is always a good idea. They help keep baby clean and comfortable and ensure we don’t end up with unexpected messes on clothing, blankets, or parents during the session.

4. A Bottle (if formula feeding or pumping) Feeding breaks are completely normal during newborn sessions. Having a bottle prepared and ready makes it easy to give baby a quick feeding if needed. A well-fed baby is a happy, sleepy baby—which means we can capture those sweet, peaceful moments that everyone loves.

5. Extra Diapers and Wipes Sometimes we forget the basics! Extra diapers and wipes are essential to have within arm’s reach. Newborns can go through several changes in a short period of time, and quick changes help keep baby content and comfortable throughout the session.

Final Thoughts

Remember, newborn sessions are meant to be low-stress and flexible. Babies run the show, and we take plenty of breaks as needed. By having these five items close by, you’re setting yourself up for a smooth, enjoyable experience that results in beautiful, heartfelt images.

If you’re expecting and looking for a newborn photographer in Maplewood, South Orange, Westfield, or anywhere in Northern New Jersey, I would love to capture these sweet early days for your family. Reach out anytime to schedule your session!
