How to Prepare for Your Fall Mini Session in Maplewood, Westfield & Summit, NJ

Fall is one of the most magical times of year in Maplewood, Westfield, and Summit, NJ—and the perfect backdrop for a mini photo session. Whether you’re looking to update your family portraits or get a great shot for your holiday card, fall mini sessions are short, sweet, and full of joy.

If you're scheduled for a session with me this season, here's everything you need to know to get the most out of it. My goal? To capture real, relaxed, and authentic moments of your family—no forced smiles, no pressure.

What to Expect from Your Mini Session

I like to keep things simple and low-stress. We'll usually start with a few classic shots (yes, the ones where everyone looks at the camera—perfect for your holiday card!), and then shift into capturing more natural interactions. Every session is a little different depending on your family’s personality:

  • Emotional and tender? Expect deep hugs, quiet snuggles, and heartfelt moments.

  • Fun-loving and silly? Get ready for laughs, games, and maybe a little dancing in the leaves.

I take cues from your family's vibe. Just be yourselves, and I promise the images will reflect the love you share.

A Few Pro Tips to Help You Prepare

  • Arrive 10 minutes early. Sessions are short and timed for the best light—being early gives everyone a chance to settle in and relax.

  • Make sure everyone is well-rested and fed. (Even parents!) Consider packing a dry, non-messy snack for little ones.

  • Relax. If you're anxious, your kids will pick up on it. It’s okay if things get a little chaotic—we roll with it!

Remind Your Partner: Love Is Their Job

Your partner's role is simply to be present and affectionate. I’ll handle the posing, prompts, and camera stuff. The more love and laughter we get, the better!

We’ll knock out the “look at the camera” shots first and then use the rest of our time to create fun, emotive images that showcase your family’s unique connection.

Kids Will Be Kids (And That’s a Good Thing!)

I don’t expect your kids to sit still or behave “perfectly.” Honestly, some of the most magical photos happen when kids are exploring, giggling, or even being a little goofy. Please don’t stand behind me yelling at them to smile—it rarely works.

If needed, a small post-session treat as a bribe can go a long way. No judgment!

Also, if we’re in a woodsy area, a quick spritz of bug spray beforehand is always a good idea.

What to Wear: Outfit Tips for Fall Mini Sessions

Start with Mom. Wear something that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable. From there, coordinate the rest of the family’s outfits.

Here are a few tried-and-true suggestions:

  • Long flowy dresses are stunning in nature and add movement to your photos.

  • Pants + a cozy sweater or blouse are perfect for later in the season when it gets chilly.

  • Avoid bright neon colors or tight clothing that might restrict movement or distract in photos.

  • For dads and boys: A soft Henley or a casual button-down looks great. Avoid anything too stiff or formal.

  • Think layers. They add interest and dimension—and help keep everyone warm!

Final Thoughts: Just Be You

The most important thing is to come as you are. These photos are about connection, not perfection. Whether your family is goofy, quiet, cuddly, or energetic—those real moments are the ones you'll treasure.

Looking forward to seeing your family in the golden glow of fall here in Maplewood, Westfield, or Summit, NJ!
