The Posed-Unposed Look: My Approach to Lifestyle Photography
When new parents reach out to me, one of the most common things I hear is:
"We’re just not natural in front of the camera."
And I get it. You’ve probably seen beautifully candid family photos online and thought, “We could never look that effortless.” But here’s the truth: most of those seemingly spontaneous moments are gently guided and staged to look natural. That’s the heart of the posed-unposed approach I bring to every lifestyle photography session.
What Is the Posed-Unposed Approach?
My style is all about creating photos that feel real—relaxed, emotional, and authentic to your family. But getting there doesn’t mean I just show up and quietly snap photos while you do your thing. Quite the opposite!
During your session, I give a lot of direction. I’ll guide you into positions or poses that feel comfortable, and then I’ll prompt you to engage with each other in meaningful ways—like kissing your baby’s cheeks, making your toddler giggle, or simply holding hands and breathing each other in.
The result? Images that look candid and full of connection, even though I helped create the framework for them.
What to Expect During Your Session
If you’re worried about what to do with your hands, how to stand, or where to look—don’t be. I’ve got you covered.
Here’s what a session with me really looks like:
I’ll guide you into a natural pose that flatters and feels comfortable
I’ll give you prompts like, “Whisper something sweet to the baby,” or “Can you trace their little ear with your finger?”
I may take one or two classic photos with everyone looking at the camera, but the focus is on genuine interactions
I’ll adjust our direction as I get a feel for your family’s vibe
Sometimes we try a pose and it doesn’t feel right—no problem! We move on. This session is for you, and it should feel easy, not forced.
Customizing the Session to Your Family
Every family has its own rhythm. Some are giggly and playful, others are quiet and affectionate. As I photograph you, I’m paying close attention to your family’s energy.
If you’re more on the silly side, I’ll aim for fun, active moments—maybe some tickles, sibling piggyback rides, or spontaneous dancing.
If you’re snuggly and calm, we’ll lean into those quiet moments—soft kisses, cozy cuddles, and gentle touches.
And if at any point something doesn’t feel right—whether it's a pose or an interaction—please don’t hesitate to tell me. Your comfort matters more than anything else.
Let’s Create Something That Feels Like You
My goal isn’t to make you look like every other family on my website. It’s to make photos that reflect your connection, your quirks, your love.
So yes, your photos will look candid and beautiful. But they’ll also be carefully crafted with you in mind—your personalities, your dynamic, and the season of life you’re in right now.
All you have to do is show up, be present, and trust the process. I’ll handle the rest.
