Lunasmith, an electric four-piece alternative/indie band hailing from New Jersey, is quickly carving out their own space in the music scene. The band brings together a mix of grunge, ’70s rock, shoegaze, and punk influences, with members from Brazil, the UK, and the US, creating a unique blend that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
I had a chance to chat with lead singer Belinda after the show, and she shared a fascinating backstory. Lunasmith is composed of two married couples who decided to chase their musical dreams post-pandemic. What’s even more astonishing is that Belinda had never sung before the band came together—not even at Karaoke. Given the powerhouse vocals she delivered that night, it’s hard to believe. Her voice is bold and beautifully commanding, a perfect fit for the band’s dynamic sound.
From the first note, their “wall of sound” approach was unmistakable. Each member had a mic, and Belinda, in particular, was a force of nature—playing both tambourine and flute, all while delivering her stunning vocal performance. The raw passion she put into each song was palpable, and it’s clear she sings with every ounce of her heart. Echoes of their influences—the Cranberries, Veruca Salt, and Elastica—were woven seamlessly into the set, infusing the night with a powerful energy.
Standout tracks included their newest single “How You Land,” the upbeat and infectious “Wind Me Up,” and “Green Gray,” a poignant track addressing global warming. During both “Viking Waltz” and “Tiny Baby Man,” Belinda showed off her versatility, effortlessly switching between vocals and flute. At one point, she held a high note with ease, then transitioned to playing the flute without missing a beat—truly impressive.
A highlight of the evening was their unexpected cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time.” Lunasmith brought their own unique spin to the classic, adding their distinctive touch without losing the emotional depth of the original.
Lunasmith may still be in the early stages of their journey in the indie/alternative scene, but after seeing their performance, it’s clear that they’re a force to be reckoned with. Keep an eye on them—this band is only just getting started.
